Questions

1. What is the state of Nyla’s GA4 coverage?

Nyla GA4 integration enables tracking for traffic, users, behavior, and e-commerce. It also includes custom dimensions, such as user attributes.
If you’re a current Nyla customer migrating to GA4, you’ll see full parity in data between Universal Analytics (UA) and GA4.

2. Are there any gaps between Nyla’s GA4 and Universal Analytics Implementations?

Because of Shopify’s current lack of support for GA4, Nyla’s GA4 offering does not support checkout step tracking in GA4. Checkout pages for Nyla merchants are hosted on Shopify so Nyla depends on Shopify to enable this data.
There are no other gaps between Nyla’s GA4 and UA implementations.

3. What GA4 limitations and caveats should I be aware of?

  1. Per question 2 above: Shopify does not currently support GA4 natively, so GA4 is not fully at parity with UA for Shopify Basic customers. See question #2 above for more information.
  2. Your GA4 data starting populating recently, so there’s not much history to go off of. In order to run year-over-year comparisons and other, longitudinal analyses, you’ll need to export data from GA4 and UA and combine. Google has no plans to unify the data sets so this will be an unfortunate reality until enough time passes since your GA4 implementation.

4. How should I think differently about GA4 compared to Universal Analytics?

  1. Check out Google’s documentation on the key differences between GA4 and UA.
  2. The biggest things to get used to are GA4’s new data model and the new user interface. As you gain experience with the new tool, we think you’ll find it easier to use than UA, but do expect some growing pains.
  3. GA4 gives much more flexibility than UA, and it consolidates canned reporting down to just a few basic reports, meaning you’ll likely create a number of custom reports instead of navigating UA’s canned options. This may feel cumbersome to start, but we think you’ll find over time that the the reduced clutter and improved customization and simplicity will help your analyses quite a bit.

5. Will I still be able to use custom dimensions?

Yes! You just don’t have to do quite as much setup as you did with UA. GA4 supports up to 50 event-scoped custom dimensions and 25 user-scoped custom dimensions. To enable these custom dimensions, you simply need to configure them in Google Tag Manager; there’s no setup required in GA and no custom dimension indices to consider.

6. I’m onboarding with Nyla. Should I invest in analytics prior to launching?

We do not recommend making suggest significant investment in analytics just prior to your Nyla go-live. Nyla has a robust analytics framework with the option to create custom implementations in Google Tag Manager.
If you’re considering migrating to GA4 with basic tracking (sessions, ecommerce) prior to your Nyla go-live, please feel free. The sooner you implement GA4 the better. Google will sunset its Universal Analytics product July 1, 2023, meaning any year-over-year comps will need to combine the two datasets, which can be a hassle. The sooner you implement GA4 the less you’ll have to combine datasets from UA and GA4.
